Learning Addition Doubles Game

Doubles Game

Addition Doubles Game

Learning addition doubles is an important early step in building students’ mental math strategies. In this game, students practice addition facts where both numbers are the same (such as 3 + 3 or 7 + 7). The game has two levels designed to support both learning and application. In Level 1, students focus on learning and recognizing doubles facts so they can quickly recall them. Research shows that developing fluency with basic math facts helps free up students’ working memory so they can focus on higher level reasoning and problem solving rather than basic calculations . Because doubles follow clear patterns and always result in even numbers, they are often one of the first sets of facts students can master, helping build confidence and number sense .

In Level 2, the focus shifts to ensuring that students truly know their doubles facts with confidence and automaticity. Mastery of doubles is an essential foundation because the next step in strategy development is using the doubles +1 or doubles −1 strategy, often called the near doubles strategy. For example, if students know that 6 + 6 = 12, they can quickly solve 6 + 7 by thinking “double six is twelve, plus one more is thirteen.” By strengthening students’ knowledge of doubles first, this game prepares them to use these related strategies efficiently and to recognize relationships between numbers, an important component of developing flexible and fluent mental addition.
