Part-Part-Whole Games | Free K–2 Math Intervention

Part- Part- Whole Games for Early Math Intervention

Part-part-whole understanding is one of the most foundational concepts in early mathematics — and one of the most reliable predictors of whether a student will develop genuine arithmetic fluency or remain dependent on counting strategies. The games on this page are designed to strengthen part-whole reasoning through varied, interactive experiences that build understanding of benchmark quantities including 5, 10, 20, and 100. Each activity moves students from concrete visual models toward abstract reasoning, following the same CRA instructional sequence that underpins our intervention programs.

If you are looking for a more structured approach, the Primary Numeracy Intervention Program is a free K–3 math intervention that includes a diagnostic assessment, leveled activity guides, workbooks, and over 100 ready-to-use resources — all built around the same foundational skills targeted on this page.

Part-Part-Whole Frames

An interactive game using color-coded counters and ten-frames to build part-whole understanding across four levels — Make 5, Make 10, Make 20, and Make 100. Two modes let teachers choose between fully visible counters for concrete instruction and hidden counters for missing addend practice. No login, no prep, works on any device.

Part-Part-Whole Number Bonds

Number Bonds is an interactive math game where students solve missing-part puzzles using number bond diagrams. Choose from 5, 10, 20, or 100, then figure out the missing number in each bond across 10 quick rounds. No visuals, no counters — just numbers. A perfect bridge from hands-on tools to confident abstract thinking.

How to Use These Games in Math Intervention

Part-part-whole games work across all three tiers of an MTSS framework. In Tier 1 whole-class instruction, project them on a smartboard and use them to introduce or reinforce benchmark number relationships as part of a number talk or warm-up. In Tier 2 small group settings, use the abstract mode to target missing addend reasoning with students who have been identified through diagnostic assessment as needing focused support in this area. In Tier 3 intensive intervention, the concrete mode provides the visual scaffolding students need to build genuine understanding before moving to abstract practice. Every game produces a score giving teachers an immediate progress monitoring data point without any grading required.

Part-whole understanding is one of the five core domains assessed in the Primary Numeracy Intervention Program, a free K–3 math intervention built on the same research foundation as these games. If these activities are revealing gaps in your students' number sense, the program gives you a precise diagnostic tool to identify exactly where the breakdown occurs and leveled materials to address it systematically — all free after completing a two-hour training.
